Moving to a new suburb comes with a familiar checklist, new supermarket, new GP, new hairdresser. A dentist usually ends up near the bottom of that list, right up until you actually need one. If you've just landed in Belconnen and you're trying to work out where to go, here's what I think is actually worth paying attention to, beyond just picking whoever shows up first on Google.
Proximity matters, but it's not the whole story
Being close to home is genuinely useful, especially for something like a dental emergency, where you don't want to be driving across Canberra in pain. But proximity alone doesn't tell you much about what an actual visit will be like once you're in the chair. It's worth weighing it alongside a few other things before you commit.
Can you see the same dentist each time?
This one gets overlooked a lot. Some practices rotate you through whoever's available on the day, which means explaining your history from scratch every visit. If you'd rather build an ongoing relationship with one dentist who already knows your teeth, your history, and what you're anxious about (if anything), it's worth asking directly whether that's something a practice can offer, rather than assuming it's the default.
How do they actually explain things?
This is hard to judge before your first visit, but it's worth thinking about. Some dentists talk at you; others take the time to explain what they're looking at and why, in plain language, before recommending anything. If you've had a dentist in the past who rushed you or made you feel talked down to, it's a completely fair thing to want to avoid this time around.
The practical stuff people forget to check
A few things that are easy to overlook until they become a problem:
- Parking. If the practice is in a shopping centre, is there actually convenient parking nearby, or are you circling for twenty minutes beforehand?
- Hours that suit you. If you work standard business hours, does the practice offer anything outside a 9-to-5 window?
- Health fund and government scheme acceptance. If you're with a private health fund, or your kids are eligible for CDBS, it's worth checking this upfront rather than finding out at the counter.
- What happens if something goes wrong. Emergencies don't wait for a convenient time. It's worth knowing before you need it whether a practice can actually see you same-day if something breaks or starts hurting.
Starting fresh doesn't mean starting from zero
If you're moving from another dentist, you don't need your full history sorted before you book, a new practice can usually request your previous records on your behalf, or you can simply start fresh if that's easier. Either way, there's no need to have everything organised before your first appointment.
