Why custom beats boil-and-bite
The chemist version is better than nothing. It is not much better.
It fits, so it stays in
Made from scans of your own teeth, so it grips without you having to clench. A guard that shifts or falls out during play is not protecting anything.
Thickness where it counts
Built up over the areas that take impact and kept slimmer elsewhere, so protection does not come at the cost of being able to breathe and talk.
They actually get worn
Comfortable, and in colours the wearer picked. Junior players in particular are far more likely to keep a guard in when they do not hate it.
Junior players
Children and teenagers need replacing more often, frequently each season, because teeth are still arriving and jaws are still growing. A guard that fitted last winter may well not fit this one.
That is worth it. Front teeth broken in childhood do not simply get fixed once. They tend to need repairing, replacing and maintaining for decades afterwards, which makes an annual mouthguard look inexpensive by comparison.
Tooth knocked out at sport? Minutes matter
For an adult tooth, hold it by the crown rather than the root. If it is clean, try to put it straight back in the socket and hold it there. If not, keep it in milk and get to a dentist immediately. Do not scrub it, and do not attempt this with a baby tooth.
