Questions are easier to ask
Most people have more questions than they ask a dentist, and language is often why. When you can ask in the language you think in, you tend to ask the thing you actually wanted to know.
Written material stays in English
Forms, treatment plans and quotes are in English, because I speak Cantonese but do not read or write Chinese. Bringing someone who reads English is genuinely useful, and completely normal here.
Why it matters more in dentistry than people assume
Agreeing to dental treatment means understanding what is wrong, what the alternatives are, and what happens if you wait. That is a lot to follow in a second language while lying in a chair with someone's hands in your mouth.
What tends to happen instead is that people nod, agree to the simplest option, and leave without asking the question they came in with. For older patients relying on an adult child to translate, it is worse again, because the explanation arrives second hand and already summarised.
Being able to talk it through directly changes the decisions people make, not just how comfortable the appointment feels.
