Check-ups and cleans

The appointment everything else depends on. A thorough look, a clean, and a straight answer about what your teeth actually need, without being sold anything you don't.

What a check-up actually includes

Four things, none of them mysterious.

A proper look

An examination of your teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, including a check for anything that needs watching rather than treating.

X-rays, only if needed

Taken when there is a clinical reason, not by default. They show what an examination alone cannot, like decay between teeth.

A scale and clean

Removing the hardened plaque a toothbrush cannot shift, then a polish. This is what keeps small gum problems from becoming big ones.

A plan you actually agree to

I talk you through what I found and what your options are. Nothing goes on a treatment plan without you understanding why it is there.

How often should you come in?

Every six to twelve months suits most people, but it genuinely depends on your teeth, your gums and your history. Someone with healthy gums and no fillings does not need the same schedule as someone managing gum disease.

If you cannot remember your last visit, that is a normal reason to book rather than a reason to put it off longer. We start from where things are now and work out a sensible schedule from there.

What it costs

A check-up is not one fixed price, because it depends on what you need on the day. What I can promise is that you will know the cost before anything happens, in writing, with no pressure to decide on the spot.

The practice is a preferred provider for several major health funds and claims on the spot, so most patients pay only the gap. Children may be covered under the CDBS, and DVA card holders are billed directly.

If the idea of a check-up makes you uneasy

Tell reception when you book. You get a longer appointment, I get a heads-up before you arrive, and we go at whatever pace you need. Happy gas and sedation are available if you want them.
